Of Rocks and Steel

From the Nelson Public Art & Sculpture Walks (March 2006) map: "Renovations to the original airport building added local art, including stainless steel panels with rock inserts by Darryl Frost. The panels, simulating riverbeds and featuring eddy spirals at the ends, required 52% to be holes for accurate wind distribution. The rocks in the piece were collected from around the region." This theme is repeated in the front entrance of the terminal building.

Wednesday Sky

You can see that our newspaper used to be called the Nelson Evening Mail; now it's the Nelson Mail so the word "Evening" has been whited out. The current Nelson Mail office is a newer building immediately to the he right of this one.

Lollipop Sign of BK

Opposite of this fantastic sculpture, this lollipop sign of BK is elected recently. I with BK will rethink this to be more like some sort of art than such an agree commercial sign post.

Ben and I are Separating...

Just for the next 10 days. I'm going up to the northern end of the country today to help a weaver move her looms out of her living room and into her new weaving "shed". And she has gazillion looms! We'll be painting the walls, dismantling and rebuilding looms, and meanwhile I'm stealing any good ideas or color schemes I can find.

Anyhoo, Ben will be holding down the fort all on his lonesome, so please come and visit and drop a friendly "Howdy" to keep him company.

This wonderful ensemble is made with the old carpet from Nelson Airport's terminal building. The story goes that the terminal building was first built, carpet of this design was installed; years (decades?) later, when they refurbished the terminal building, they custom-ordered carpet of the exact same design!! Thankfully, after the recent refurbishments this century, we have more muted colors and a less, shall we say, noticeable design.

Danger!?

The warning label is starting to pealing off. It says, "Before digging, consult Nelson Electricity Ltd," and has their phone number. I think it should be a little more permanent and hopefully noticeable or artistic!?

Rushing Home

Signals Changed!

Nelson City Council recently changed how signal works on the major intersection ahead. That is what this sign is talking about.

We received an "anonymous" comment to our Saturday's post from the owner of "Kaikouradailyphoto.blogspot.com" that we're encroaching on his/her territory. Kaikoura is on the eastern coast of the South Island, famous for whale watching and crayfish, and if a DPexists, it'd be great because we will no longer be the only ones on the South Island of New Zealand. But Meg can't find the said blog in the portal, nor by its URL, nor by Googling. Let us know if you find Kaikoura DP, please.

Crossing Seddon Bridge

It's narrow, rickety, and a little scary, but I love this bridge. This is on State Highway 1, so big trucks traveling from Christchurch to Blenheim, Picton, and on to the ferry to the North Island cross this bridge, too.

Fortunately, we've never had the pleasure of being there when the train was traveling above us.

Art in Construction Site

The art work, "Southern Cross" by Bruce Mitchell, 1992, (Golden Bay black marble) is now in the middle of the Trafalgar Street construction site. Infrastructure upgrade is being carried out throughout the CBD.

Two-Way Bridge

This is a two-way bridge because the trains go on the top, while cars go below. They are building a new bridge you see in the centre of the pic, so sometime in the future, we'll no longer be going though my favorite bridge.

This is south of Blenheim, just before Seddon, on State Highway 1.

A few days ago we had ice down south and tornadoes in the Waikato; yesterday it was torrential rain and flood in the top half of the North Island; today, no power, no phone. Parts of Northland flooded in March and just finished repairing all the damage. Here in Nelson, well, we had a bit of low temperature. This is what the clouds looked like yesterday. (The white line shows the top half of North Island.)

Collingwood Dusk

By the way, I just heard on the radio that 40 years ago today, New Zealand currency became decimal. This means New Zealand got rid of Pound Sterling and introduced New Zealand Dollars. They started studying this in 1959, and decided in 1963, so they weren't in a hurry, were thy? Here's more information.

As well, JB said the first currencies were hidious looking, so I went looking for images. There are not great photos, but here are some I found: currency conversion poster, selection of proposed designs, and some more blurbs. Here's a short clip from what I'd imagine was a TV ad. And I heard a hilarious song by a Derek somebody about the conversion, but I haven't found a clip to that, yet. Here's a link to an afternoon programme on National Radio this afternoon; just the very first part talks about the decimal conversion, followed by an interview with a 91-year old original sheep sheering competition winner. I think the song was played before this segment started.

The Nation's Capital

This is a paddock outside the town of Collingwood in Golden Bay, shot in May. Back in 1859, someone in England thought this would make a good nation's capital. But if you look at the map, you can see it's surrounded by hills and it would have been a hard slog transporting building material by road; back then, the primary mode of transport would have been boats, I hope. Nowadays, it's a quiet little town with one gas station, one pub, a few motels, a camp ground, and very nice beach houses.

Our Area Exhibit opened last night at the McKee at the Suter. What did I think? Well, there's plenty over here.

Suffice it to say, I should learn not to get so wound up the night before I give another speech at Toastmasters; I finally felt semi-sleepy at 1:45, and I was up before 5:30.

Cloud & Moon

This was shot at Blythells Bay, Marlborough Sounds, not this past weekend but the one before. I just looked up to see the cloud and found the moon next to it.

It's been raining off an on for almost a week since then, and it's hard to remember the clear sky.

Mini Mall - End of June

As at the end of June. Our new mini mall construction has progressed a little; there is a concrete stairway in middle of nowhere. This is taken from the back with two consecutive shots merged into one view. Compared this to shots from March here and here; the Newmans wall was taken down in April, I believe.

July Theme Day: The Color Red

There's a wee boat race taking place in ValeNZia (Valencia), Spain, you may have heard of. I'm sufficiently interested in it, but not enough to stay up all night watching it; Meg, not so. Although she's all for the Kiwi boys on the Black Boat, (and there are plenty of Kiwi boys on Alinghi as well), if the Black Boat wins, Louis Vitton and America's Cup races will most likely come back to Auckland, in 2011, which would take the shine off of that more widely-anticipated event, the Rugby World Cup. And yet, she hates to watch the boys loose (and even worse, the defected Kiwis win); these are complicated times for her. The Cup might be decided late tonight.
