There is a story that some of these big old gum trees have sprung from marker stakes placed by surveyors in the early days of European settlement in NZ. There are two of them in Marlborough. I don't know how true it is but it makes a good story.

Rose, that sounds possibly likely because this is on Selwyn, the corner north-east corner of Cathedral Hill. You know where it is?
